Did you know that eggs will sink, float, and stay in the middle of water if you change the level of salt in the water?! This is such a fun & hands on experiment for all ages – let me show you how it’s done.
Materials you’ll need:
- 3 Eggs (just regular eggs, they don’t need to be boiled)
- 3 glasses of water
- Salt
Directions:
- Place each egg into it’s own cup (3 total).
- For cup #1 – fill with tap water. The egg will sink right to the bottom.
2. For cup #2 – fill with salt water. The egg will float to the top!
3. For cup #3 – fill with 1/2 salt water to see the egg float – then slowly add tap water on top to see it sink gradually. Once it sinks about 1/2 way, stop pouring the tap water. The egg will stay in the middle!
Here is the science behind this:
- The egg will sink in regular tap water because the density of the egg is greater than the density of water.
- When you add salt to the water, you are increasing the density of the water by adding more mass (or stuff) which causes the egg to float!
- As you add more fresh water, it causes the egg to slowly sink, suspending itself in the middle!
