If you’ve been looking for a super easy way to color pumpkin seeds – this is for you!
Other ideas I’ve seen include soaking the seeds with vinegar and food coloring. I don’t know about you, but the smell of vinegar is not for me. Let me show you what to do – it’s super easy!
NOTE: If you have younger kids who put things in their mouth, you will not want to color them this way! It is not taste safe.
Here is everything you’ll need:
- Dried pumpkin seeds
- Acrylic paint
- Tin foil / parchment paper
- Zip lock baggies
Directions:
- If you’re taking your pumpkin seeds straight from the pumpkin – you’ll need to let your pumpkin seeds dry.
- They can be dried in the sun or in an oven on warm for 3 to 4 hours. Stir them frequently to avoid burning.

2. Add your pumpkin seeds to a zip lock bag. I did roughly a handful of seeds for each baggie.

3. Add acrylic paint into the zip lock bag with the seeds. I eye balled this part but I would say it was roughly 3 table spoons of acrylic paint.

4. Close your zip lock bag & have fun rubbing the paint around so that it coats all the seeds! (This is my kids favorite part)

5. Once everything is completely coated – dump your seeds out of the zip lock bag and line them on a sheet of tin foil or parchment paper. You want them to be in a fairly thin line. A thicker line makes them all stick together and doesn’t dry as well.

6. Now the hard part – waiting for them to dry. We let ours dry over night :)
7. You’re finished! These colored pumpkin seeds make such a fun fall addition to your crafts. They’re also perfect in a sensory bin for fall!

Here is a short video of us making ours:
Reasons why I love this craft:
- No vinegar is included!
- Easy and quick to make.
- My kids love mixing the seeds up in the bags.
- They make the perfect filler for sensory bins.
