
This pinecone experiment is so much fun – for any age!
I have lived in a state with TONS of pinecones my entire life. I never knew that pinecones opened & shut based on the weather. You have to try this one out with your kids!!
What you’ll need:
- Glass of water
- Pinecones
Directions:
- Gather your pinecones and submerge them in water. They will slowly close shut!
- Place in the sun & watch them open wide as the water evaporates.

The science explanation behind this:
- On rainy days, pine cones fold their scales to prevent seeds from spreading in humid/wet weather, whereas on a sunny day, these scales gape open to release their seeds. This strategy promotes the survival of a species! How cool is that?!
